AMO the ARG: on the street where you "live" (day 1)

the bumpy flight from bogota to buenos aires left me sick--incapacitated, really--for a few hours after our arrival. z went off exploring on her own, while i took a recovery nap. by the early afternoon, i was able to hit the streets outside of our rented apartment in search of something light and argentinian to eat.

we stayed a two-bedroom, duplex apartment in a recoleta, not in the section of town where tourists would typically stay, but in a residential neighborhood off a busy main street, avenida pueyrredon.
i loved watching people go through their every day lives, going to and from work, picking up their kids from school, walking their dogs, meeting for coffee...

these photos will not be the best of the bunch-- i struggled to take photos at first, i hadn't adjusted to the tight, busy corners and the bright sun-- but i'm sentimental about them as they mark the very first things i saw and loved and would sort of set the stage for the rest of the week.

a cafe on "our" corner, avenues berruti and pueyrredon...

the festive buses...i soon found out that each line has its own design....

portenos, waiting for the bus...

i loved the architecture...and the power lines that cut across the streets...

and duero, the euro-style coffee shop where i had my first meal, on the corner of avenidas pueyrredon and santa fe.

since i was still recovering, i had tea with milk (te con leche) and toast with dulce de leche.
duero would become our regular breakfast stop, with only a couple of exceptions.
and i basically always ordered this (but with coffee...good, strong coffee)

two of the fine staffers at duero...

pretty city: meet gary

i've been reading lately about the merits of a 50mm lens--i have a good one, but really haven't explored its use outside of...well, i haven't used it outside. i rely on my tamron zoom when i'm outdoors. i like that it allows me to get up-close to something or someone (somewhat) unobtrusively (it's sort of long, and hard to miss). but the 50mm is a lens that was standard back in the day. (henri cartier-bresson? he used a 50mm on a small format camera. clearly the thing works). so this is what i'll be taking out with me for the next several weeks. we'll see what i can learn.

it's a whole different world with the 50 mm--you have to really move around and do a lot of recomposing to get a shot. but i kinda like it.

today, i hit the madison square park area (on my way to home depot). if you stand on the northwest corner of the park, you'll have one of the best views of the empire state building. i've yet to come up with a better than ordinary shot of that landmark, but i wanted to give it a try today.

i saw this instead. a rad bike. just waiting for me to take its picture.

was this a piece of art?

detail shot, of the wheel...this is for my friend, nicholas. crazy? crazy generous, crazy cute, girl crazy...which is part of why we all love him.

tried to get the flatiron in there somehow. i took many from this angle.

and then finally the bike's owner popped up and asked if he could get in the photo.
meet gary...photogenic gary. i thanked him for his modeling...

and that encounter, my friends, made my day.
more with the 50 mm to come.

piym: oh my cherry pie

i confess--i made this cherry pie.
i am guessing that if jess made it, it would be a little less brown around the edges.

but the truth in advertising is, from crust to fruit filling, it's all made lovingly from scratch.
and at a dinner party/taste test it received high marks. not bad for a first pass.
sweet, even.

check out jess in this week's episode, she's got fun facts and a few important tips for preparing the pastry crust...

pretty sweets

a buffet brunch is never a proper test of a kitchen's talents--it's basic fare (breakfast sausages, mini flapjacks, a tray of shiny pink lox, cold and warm salads, an omelette station, a carving station, assorted breads and breakfast pastries...). you always hope for surprises under silver warming trays, but usually the surprise is that a dish can survive well those swampy conditions. there is something to be said, though, for having many opportunities to fill clean plates and satisfy multiple cravings.

i'll tell you what i liked at brasserie 8 1/2--the brussels sprouts salad, the roasted cauliflower salad, and the creamy polenta with truffle oil. and they make a very good brioche. but the buffet was really a big tease--thin strips of lean beef swam in a zing-less barbeque sauce; bountiful shrimp cocktail, in a silver bowl as big as my bathroom sink, were undersized and various shades of over/under cooked pink and grey. the sweet crepe, made to order, with slices of strawberries, bananas, and chocolate sauce and finished with orange liqueur was a gloppy mess.

the desserts were good and sweet, but maybe more decadent for the eyes...i did have fun taking these photos.

pretty city: the high line

quiet, before the storm.

my handsome writer friend observed that the city sounds different from up here...
i wore my hood to protect from the cold and occasional sharp wind, but it meant i did not really notice this for myself.
i hope one day he'll write about what i missed.

can you even seen the snow? click to enlarge the image, you'll see a few snowflakes...
