a glace (chocolat, vanille), may 28, 2011.
this is one of my favorite pictures from paris--a "glace" that i enjoyed at french open.
i had idea for a post about the food at roland garros, how it was better than at the us open, how it was quintessentially french (simple, balanced...) but the writing never quite came together, which disappointed me mostly because i think this photo is luscious: i love the slow melt and the blue in the background.
i was quite a sight, taking this one: cone in the left hand, camera in the right, tamron lens zoomed to the max, my arms just long enough to squeeze the cone in the frame. it made for a good and fun shot-- I know, as another photographer took my picture right at that moment (he showed it to me, i like it a lot. i think it's out in bing- or flickr-land somewhere. if you find it, please send it my way).
anyway, the other day as i listened to radio wimbledon, one of my favorite commentators, robbie koenig--who seems to reference food and hunger during the long matches a bit more than the others--described a ball that hit the line during the nadal/delpotro match as "A CHOCOLATE AND VANILLA SWIRL!!!" (i.e. GOOD: half-in, half-out).
love that.
and it gives me a reason to post this photo: this one's for mr koenig, and everyone on the radio wimbledon team, with thanks for making my work days during this fortnight so much fun.
