Kate Winslet - the beauty in black

The always gorgeous Kate Winslet has been favouring black this season. At the Golden Globe Awards function, she wore a one shoulder black dress from Atelier Yves Saint Laurent that perfetly accentuated her perfect figure.

She highlighted the design's pearl and crystal embroidery with diamonds from Tiffany & Co and wore her hair in a chignon that looked just perfect with the dress. She looked every inch glamorous and classy.

How to create a chignon like Kate Winslet?
From her hair dresser: "I wanted Kate Winslet to look like a glamorous woman with a slightly undone style," said Frederic Fekkai celebrity hairstylist Renato Campora, who created the look. He mixed mousse with glossing cream to rough-up the hair, then set the entire head in pin curls. After the curls had set, he gathered all the hair at the back of the neck, set it with bobby pins, and added a touch of shine serum. The final touch? "I bent the ends with a one-inch curling iron to make them pretty," he said.

At the British Academy Film Awards 2010, Kate Winslet wore a sexy black Stella McCartney gown with Stella McCartney sandals and Tiffany & Co. jewelry. She showed off her svelte shape in a peek-a-boo gown with lace insets.

Colour Popping

Jennifer Garner attended the 12th Annual "I have a Dream" Foundation's Gospel Brunch in Los Angeles. Jennifer wore a brilliant fuchsia Dior minidress; she paired the dress with cork-soled wedges.

The French actress Audrey Tautou looked totally chic at the BAFTA Awards in London. Tautou wore a lovely cocktail-length coral Lanvin dress, which she accessorized with pops of red: lipstick, pumps and clutch included. The red looked lovely with the dress, loving this shade of red.

Doing the Bling

Kate Hudson attended the Burberry Prorsum 2010 Autumn/Winter fashion show during London Fashion Week clad in a Buberry Prorsum emerald mini dress and shoes from the same designer house.

At the show, Kate stole the spotlight in an ultra-short sequined green design. She wore sky high black platform heels with the dress and paired a chunky ring in black.

Taking shimmer tip from Kate: When wearing shimmer all over, take a tip from Hudson and add chunky accessories in a neutral hue that would add glam to the dress at the same time tone down the shimmer.

At the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards in California, Taylor Swift had heads turned when she arrived in a sequinned blue off-the-shoulder sparkly gown by Kaufman Franco. Her sheath dress fitted impeccably ang her hair and makeup were a perfection. Authentic as usual. She did an updo style with wavy hair, her signature (she later opened her hair that looked equally lovely).

She accessorised her down with diamond bracelets, diamond teardrop danglers and matching blue sandals. Totally loved her long dropped diamond earrings. She looks fab!

Glowing in Gold was none other than the fashion forward Sarah Jessica Parker at the Halston Fashion Show in NYC. Ms Parker led the Fashion Week in a pleated gold top by Halston and cropped black pants. For accessories, she added extra shine via a sparkling statement necklace, structured thorn clutch by Cassandra LA (love the clutch, isn't it gorgeous?), and Prada studded sandals. Chain wrap bracelets and a square-cut ring complete her fashion fire.

Despite going on too much on accesories on a gold top, the black pants and sandals perfectly added the just required balance to the blingy look. While leaving the show, Sarah wore a pretty pink and bloe brocade jacket.

Anne Hathaway glowed in a sequined bronze Vivienne Westwood dress at the Alice in Wonderland London Premiere. She paired her dress with gold heels and red nails. She was every inch the siren in a figure-flaunting bustier dress glowing in gold.

pretty city: the "it's new york, baby" edition

we don't have it too bad here, but this seems unwise.

"it's new york, baby..." said david, to three guys who yowled after stepping in a puddle that was better than ankle-deep.

hear a little song/the kids are alright

i think we need to liven up this dreary wednesday with a little west side story/bernstein mambo, courtesy of gustavo dudamel and venezuela's simon bolivar youth orchestra.

i first caught this on ovation in january--and it's on again now, which is what inspired me to share this today--and i could not contain myself. i was dancing around and applauding as if they could hear me.

a few notes: the musicians in the simon bolivar youth orchestra were trained in "el sistema"--a music program established in 1975 by the economist jose antonio abreu. it is a state funded program, which as of 2007 included 102 youth and 55 childrens orchestras. roughly 250,000 children participate, 90% of them from poor socio-economic backgrounds.

mr. dudamel himself learned to play the violin through el sistema--and eventually studied composition and conducting. he began conducting the youth orchestra at 15, was appointed its musical director within a few years.

in 2009, at the age of 26, he began his tenure as the musical director of the los angeles philharmonic.

(the nj all-state children's band, circa 1980, could offer up a solid version of macarthur park and the liberty bell. but we didn't sound like this.)

this is the finale, that made me go bananas! love everyone whooping it up at the end.

here it is, one of the episodes i've been waiting for...

Winter Trees

All the complicated details
of the attiring and
the disattiring are completed!
A liquid moon
moves gently among
the long branches.
Thus having prepared their buds
against a sure winter
the wise trees
stand sleeping in the cold.

Designer to watch out for: Peter Pilotto

Peter Pilotto, the new name in th fasion industry that has caught the attention of some o the biggest fashionistas including Jessica Alba and The First Lady Ms Michelle Obama, is surely a brand to watch out for. Their collection embraces both new and classic perspectives on elegance.

There are two individuals and four cultures behind the Peter Pilotto collection. Peter Pilotto is half Austrian, half Italian and his partner Christopher De Vos is half Belgian, half Peruvian. The former is the textile expert while De Vos concentrates on the silhouette and draping. The result is a collection that embodies otherwordly prints combined with soft sculptural shapes. The team describes their design process as being very organic and their fascination with a scientific view of nature is reflected in the stunning hyper real prints found in the collection.

The ever chic lady Jessica Alba was spotted at The Beverly Hilton Hotel to promote the new movie “Valentine’s Day”, in a beautiful Peter Pilotto Spring 2010 mini dress. Love the mix of colours which look like a moody sunset, blush and deep blue in mettalic painted over the faint snakeskin pattern.

the "infra-ordinary"

i just got back from a quick trip to the ICP (pay what-you-wish-fridays, 5-8pm, is ideal for such a compact venue).

showing now: a solid, if familiar, assemblage of surrealist images of paris in the 1920s and 30s (man ray, brassaï...a personal favorite is andré kertész's rue vavin, paris 1925); a set of prints by eugène atget that offer a dreamy historical record of the city of lights; and a collection of miroslav tichý's photographs (crudely printed, mostly of women, taken surreptitiously). i can see why some consider the work "stalker-esque" and creepy...but i love the evocative blur in so many of them.

it was said that tichy's photographs exemplify the "infra-ordinary" -- french novelist georges perec's term for "that which passes when nothing passes. " perec wrote, in approaches to what?, "my intention is to describe what remains, that which we generally don't notice, which doesn't call attention to itself, which is of no importance, what happens when nothing happens, what passes when nothing passes, except time, people, cars and clouds."

agree or disagree with whether or not tichy achieves this, but i think it's a worthy challenge...

***
on my way home, i tried to practice "follow-focusing" with my 50mm. at night, this is quite a trick. so i wound up with a lot of mistakes including these--they have a kind of "tichy blur"?
i don't think i can get away with quite this much of it though. oh well.

wondering...does black & white help or hurt?

pretty city: fashion week/here comes a regular

before fashion week fall 2010 left ny and bryant park, i decided to try to play "the sartorialist." i'm not sure why it didn't occur to me head over there earlier in the week--even though it isn't really my scene, i should have known it would be ripe for photo-ops. so many things to catch the eye--color, pattern, contrast. so many surprising and bold no-nos (and laughs), a few real beauties, and many, many people who want more than anything to be photographed and fawned over. (i prefer those who don't want it so badly, yet won't begrudge you the shot.) i found a little of all of that.

i don't have shots of any "famous" types, but russell simmons, tommy hilfiger, and i think hamish bowles, and other industry types walked right by me. meh. there were so many attendees coming from all directions, and the crowd of us could get easily diverted. i was much more interested in the regulars, anyway.
